A 21-year-old unemployed youth, Liladhar, a resident of Saidan Wali village, allegedly died by suicide after coming in front of a moving train near Abohar in Fazilka district on Wednesday.
According to reports, he was run over by the Sriganganagar–Bathinda passenger train at around 9 am. Family members and villagers said he had been under stress due to unemployment.
Village Sarpanch Raman Kumar said Liladhar, who had passed Class XII and was pursuing an ITI course, was preparing for recruitment examinations for the Railways. He had appeared in several competitive examinations earlier but was unable to secure a job. Some of his younger relatives had secured employment, which reportedly added to his distress.
Activists of the NGO Nar Sewa Narayan Sewa Samiti, led by Bittu Narula, along with personnel of the Government Railway Police (GRP), reached the spot and shifted the body to the mortuary of the Civil Hospital, Abohar.
Police said they were investigating the matter.
