TAWAU: A female pedestrian suffered head injuries after being struck by an e-hailing vehicle while crossing Jalan Dunlop at 8.45am, Saturday.

Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the 68-year-old woman is currently receiving treatment at Tawau Hospital.

According to Jasmin, the incident occurred when a 41-year-old Proton Saga driver was travelling towards the town centre from Batu 2, Jalan Apas.

“Upon reaching Jalan Dunlop, a female pedestrian suddenly crossed the road from left to right. The driver, who was in the left lane, was unable to avoid her due to the short distance and collided with the victim,” he said.

Jasmin added that the driver’s vehicle sustained damage to the front bumper, bonnet and a shattered windscreen as a result of the collision.

The case is being investigated under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 (LN 166/59).

Jasmin urged pedestrians to always use designated crossings, such as zebra crossings, particularly in busy city areas.

He also reminded the public that crossing at undesignated points can increase the risk of accidents and endanger both pedestrians and other road users.

Footage of the incident showing the woman lying on the road after the collision has since gone viral on social media.
