The Folarin Balogun red card saga has taken another twist before the USA’s World Cup Round of 16 match against Belgium.
Balogun received a straight red card for serious foul play against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32.
He was supposed to be banned from playing in the next round before FIFA suspended the ban for a year.
The striker is now in the USA’s starting lineup against Belgium, creating even more controversy worldwide.
However, Balogun and the USMNT have both been dealt a new punishment ahead of the World Cup Round of 16.

FIFA fines Folarin Balogun and the USMNT after red card at 2026 World Cup
FIFA announced on Monday afternoon that Balogun and the USMNT had been fined $40,000 for the red card incident.
“Folarin Balogun was sent off on a red card in the 64th minute for serious foul play following a VAR review,” the official statement read.
“After the match, he entered the field of play to celebrate with his teammates despite his expulsion…
“On 5 July 2026, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee found Balogun guilty of both infringements, imposed a one-match suspension (suspended on probation for one year) and a USD 40,000 fine, and notified the parties of the decision…
“The US Soccer Federation was declared jointly liable for payment of the fine pursuant to Article 6.5 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.”
These fines are another fascinating aspect of the most controversial situation at the 2026 World Cup so far.
While most football fans believe Balogun’s red card was wrong, no one expected him to be available against Belgium.
Given that Belgium appealed to FIFA for Balogun’s suspension to be upheld, they will likely be furious if he scores tonight.
It certainly feels as though the striker will be involved in something, whether it is a goal or another refereeing decision.
