Filipina jailed 28 months for fake MyKad

Kota Kinabalu: A 44-year-old Filipina was sentenced to 28 months' jail by the Magistrate's Court on Tuesday for possessing a fake MyKad.

Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin imposed the sentence after Rowena Lienado pleaded guilty to possessing the document bearing the name Norain Abd Rahman and serial number 901122-12-6620 at the Inanam police station at 6.20pm on July 30.

The offence, under Regulation 25(1)(e) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007), carries a maximum jail term of three years, a fine of up to RM20,000, or both, upon conviction.

The court heard Rowena was detained during Ops Bersepadu and checks found her fingerprints were not recorded in the National Registration Department (NRD) system, with investigations confirming the MyKad was fake.

The court ordered Rowena to serve her sentence from the date of arrest and be referred to the Immigration Department upon completing her jail term, while NRD prosecuting officer Mohamad Faisal Tahir appeared for the prosecution and the accused was unrepresented.
