
Kota Kinabalu: A 33-year-old undocumented Filipino was sentenced to 30 years’ jail and 12 strokes of the cane for trafficking 475.1gm of syabu three years ago.
Judicial Commissioner Ratanah Devi Yusof Perumal handed down the sentence to Zulkipli Utok after finding that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Zulkipli was found guilty of trafficking the drug at 1.50pm on July 4, 2023, in front of Restoran Farvis, Taman Telipok Ria, Tuaran.
He was convicted under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act, which provides for the death sentence or life imprisonment and at least 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Lovely Natasha Charles prosecuted while assigned counsel Shahlan Jufri represented Zulkipli, with six prosecution and two defence witnesses called during the trial.
