KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 — A fire destroyed about 60 per cent of a Pos Laju building in Bekenu, about 47km south-west of Miri in Sarawak, this morning, although no one was injured.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department’s Operations Centre said in a statement today that it received an emergency call at 8.44am before five firefighters from the Batu Niah Fire and Rescue Station were dispatched to the scene.

The team, led by Senior Fire Officer II Azalan Azaman, arrived at about 9.30am and found the Pos Laju building, measuring about 15.2m by 12.2m, on fire.

“Initial inspections found that an estimated 60 per cent of the permanent structure had been destroyed by the fire.

“No victims were reported to have been involved or injured in the incident,” the department said.

Firefighters battled the blaze using a hose line stretching about 122m with two nozzles, while also drawing water from an open source.

The fire was brought under control at about 9.58am, while extinguishing and follow-up operations continued at the scene.

A Compact Rescue Tender and five firefighters were deployed for the operation.

The cause of the fire and the estimated losses have yet to be determined.
