A major fire has engulfed a 150-hectare oil palm plantation in Nenasi, Pekan, with firefighters battling the blaze for a second day.

NENASI: Firefighting operations are ongoing at a 500-hectare oil palm plantation in Nenasi, Pekan, after a blaze broke out yesterday. Pahang Fire and Rescue Department deputy director Wan Ahmad Fadillah Wan Abdul Rahman said the fire affecting around 150 hectares has been brought under control.

So far, 48 hectares have been extinguished. Firefighting operations are divided into two teams using a portable pump with two 300-foot hose streams drawing from open water sources.

A request for assistance from the JBPM Air Unit has been submitted to accelerate efforts. This is due to limited access to the fire site, which hinders the movement of vehicles and personnel.

JBPM is also conducting a separate firefighting operation at an oil palm plantation in Kampung Jemeri, Kuala Rompin. That blaze, covering about 292 hectares, has entered its second day.

So far, 6.07 hectares have been extinguished there, with an estimated 286 hectares remaining. The operation is being carried out using a portable pump with a 600-foot hose and two water streams.

Overall, the operations involve 28 personnel from the Nenasi and Kuala Rompin Fire and Rescue Stations. They are supported by assets including Light Fire Rescue Tender vehicles, four-wheel-drive vehicles, and support lorries.

No casualties have been reported so far. Firefighting operations continue, with the fire in both locations reported to be gradually under control.

Wan Ahmad Fadillah advised the public not to conduct open burning. He urged compliance with instructions from authorities and immediate reporting of fire incidents via the 999 emergency hotline.
