First Federal Minister to visit 103-year-old Labuan church

LABUAN: The Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh recently briefly visited the renovated Church of the Blessed Sacrament and stepped in the church’s records as the first federal minister to do so.

The imposing church with new look and a seating capacity of 1,800 and built at a cost of around RM10 million was last April consecrated in ceremony led KK Archdiocese Arch Bishop John Wong and accompanied by several priests.

The minister shared pictures of visit to the church in her social postings. She was seen chatting with local parishioners inside church, at the tomb of Christ site and the Spiritual Garden of St Joseph with life-sized statue of St Joseph carrying baby Christ.

The garden sprawled 1.3 acres act as a church “oasis” a calm spot in an environment usually busy with activities.

According to a senior parishioner Hannah is a Christian the Labuan church  transformation could have interested her.

Since the church had been renovated it had been drawing many pilgrims and others and giving Labuan tourism a small boost.

The church rebuilt in 1972 was originally established in 1923 by Fr Sotter and rebuilt in 1972 under Fr Aloysius Tung. It was first named as Christi Corpus Church (Body of Christ).
