Flooding subsides in parts of Metro Manila, remains deep in Quezon City

(UPDATE) MANILA, Philippines — Floodwaters subsided in several parts of Metro Manila by midnight Tuesday, but deep flooding remained in portions of Quezon City following heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon, or Habagat.

The Metro Manila Council Management Coordinating and Monitoring Center (MMCM-MCMC), in its 12 a.m. update, reported knee- to tire-deep flooding along several roads in Quezon City, with some areas remaining are not passable to vehicles.

Water along NS Amoranto from G. Araneta Avenue to Sto. Domingo Avenue reached 19 inches, or knee-deep, and was not passable to all vehicles.

Flooding reached 26 inches, or tire-deep, along the northbound and southbound lanes of A. Bonifacio Cloverleaf and on Araneta Avenue from Maria Clara Street to Florentino Street. Both areas remained impassable to all types of vehicles.

Quezon Avenue from Biak-na-Bato Street to D. Tuazon Street also remained impassable to light vehicles, while water near Capitol Medical Center reached 19 inches.

Several other flooded roads remained passable. Water levels were about 8 inches along EDSA North Avenue, EDSA Bansalangin northbound and Commonwealth-Technopark westbound. EDSA northbound near Liberty Avenue had about 4 inches of water, while East Avenue-EDSA westbound had about 8 inches, with both remaining passable to all vehicles.

Flooding had already subsided along Araneta Avenue-E. Rodriguez northbound and southbound by 8 p.m. and at White Plains-Temple Drive by 9 p.m.

In Manila, flooding at España Boulevard corner Antipolo Street subsided by 9 p.m., followed by España Boulevard corner M. Dela Fuente Street at 10 p.m.

Other areas in the city continued to have about 8 inches of water but remained passable, including España Boulevard corner Jhocson Street, Abad Santos Avenue corner Yuseco Street, Rizal Avenue corner Bambang Street and the Quirino Station walkway.

Malabon also reported improving conditions, with flooding along Gov. Pascual Avenue, F. Sevilla Boulevard in Bayan and C. Arellano Street in Ibaba already subsiding.

Flooding along M.H. Del Pilar Street and Don Basilio Bautista Street had likewise subsided, with residual water at about 8 inches and 3 to 4 inches, respectively. Both roads remained passable to all types of vehicles.

In Barangay San Agustin, flooding had subsided by 10 p.m., but water remained half-knee-deep and the area was still not passable to light vehicles.

The MMCM-MCMC said the update was based on monitoring from Metrobase and closed-circuit television cameras, as well as reports from local government emergency operations centers and other agencies.

Information on affected areas was relayed to MMDA officials, Metropolitan Public Safety Office members and other agencies under the Metropolitan Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
