The quake, which was felt across much of Istanbul, has led many residents to gather in outdoor spaces, with some continuing to stay in parks as aftershocks continue.

Emergency services said 151 people were injured after jumping from heights during the quake.

Disruptions to mobile phone networks were reported across the city shortly after the tremor.

Despite the public holiday, traffic congestion exceeded 70% on Wednesday, according to data from Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, as people sought to move to safer areas.
