Luxury takes a fruitier turn with Johnnie Walker Black Ruby
LUXURY in whisky does not always arrive in a heavy crystal bottle.
Sometimes, it comes in the form of a deep ruby pour, with aromas of ripe berries, dark fruit and gentle smoke.
Johnnie Walker Black Ruby is a new permanent expression that takes blended Scotch in a richer, fruit-led direction.
Built around red wine, Pedro Ximenez and oloroso sherry casks, alongside bourbon casks, it brings together layers of ripe fruit, spice and soft smoke.
The result is a whisky that feels indulgent without being overly formal, making it an interesting option for both traditional whisky drinkers and those looking for something slightly different.
Black Ruby opens with raspberry preserve, black cherry, plum and honeyed vanilla.
There are also notes of caramel, raisin, baking spice and dark chocolate, giving it a dessert-like quality without becoming overly sweet.
On the palate, raspberry, blackberry and cherry remain prominent, followed by fig, dried fruit and gentle spice.
A subtle thread of smoke adds structure, while the finish brings together caramel, oak, pepper and lingering smokiness.
The fruit is generous, but it does not overwhelm the whisky.
Oak, spice and smoke provide enough contrast to keep the profile balanced and give the sweeter notes some depth.
Black Ruby can be enjoyed neat, particularly by drinkers who prefer softer, fruit-led spirits.
A few drops of water open up the jammy fruit notes while bringing out more dried fruit, vanilla and gentle smoke.
Served over one large ice cube, the whisky takes on a more relaxed character while retaining its richness.
It works as an after-dinner pour, an evening drink with friends or as part of a casual tasting.
Its profile also lends itself to cocktails.

Black Ruby can add depth to a whisky sour, bring berry notes to an Old Fashioned or offer a fruitier base for a Negroni-style serve.
Jennifer English, Johnnie Walker’s global brand director, describes Black Ruby as a new direction for the brand’s Black Collection.
The expression retains elements associated with Black Label while introducing a richer fruit profile designed with contemporary drinking occasions in mind.
What makes Black Ruby interesting is the way it approaches Scotch without moving too far from its foundations.
It is not intended to replace a smoky or heavily peated whisky.
Instead, it offers another route into the category, particularly for drinkers drawn to red fruit, spice and softer layers of smoke.
The expression also reflects the way whisky is increasingly being enjoyed beyond the traditional neat pour.
Its fruit-led character gives bartenders more room to experiment, while its depth means it can still be appreciated on its own.
As part of the Malaysian launch, Johnnie Walker is working with bartenders and mixologists to explore Black Ruby through new serves and combinations.
Signature cocktails, bar takeovers and curated experiences are planned at selected venues in the coming months, with further details to be shared through Johnnie Walker Malaysia’s official Instagram page.
For those who enjoy whisky with plenty of fruit and spice alongside its oak and smoke, Black Ruby offers a different way to approach blended Scotch.
It is expressive without being overly heavy, with enough complexity to make a slower sip worthwhile.
