The one-off RM100 payment, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in July and rolled out on August 31, is distributed through MyKad and can be used until the end of December. While millions of Malaysians have welcomed the assistance, concerns were raised when a politician revealed that Jho Low’s MyKad number showed up as “eligible” in the MyKasih system.

The revelation sparked criticism that a system designed to help citizens most in need appears to lack safeguards against misuse. Observers pointed out the irony that while many Malaysians encounter glitches or delays at checkout counters, a fugitive linked to the multibillion-dollar 1MDB scandal is technically listed among those entitled to aid. The episode has raised questions about oversight, eligibility filters, and accountability in the disbursement process.

The MyKasih system itself has already faced challenges. On the first day of the programme, supermarkets reported long delays at payment terminals due to an unusually high volume of transactions. Some frustrated shoppers abandoned full trolleys when their payments could not be processed, leaving staff scrambling to return items to the shelves. The Ministry of Finance later confirmed that while the system experienced slowdowns, all transactions were being received and processed.

Officials have emphasised that the SARA programme is part of a wider effort to ease the burden of living costs by offering immediate relief through direct spending. However, the discovery of Jho Low’s eligibility risks undermining public trust in the initiative. For many, it highlights a need for greater scrutiny of how databases are managed and whether individuals wanted by authorities should automatically be flagged to prevent such embarrassments.

Critics argue that the oversight is more than a technical glitch—it symbolises a gap in governance. A scheme meant to demonstrate fairness and efficiency has, instead, created room for ridicule, with the image of a fugitive enjoying the same benefits as struggling citizens cutting sharply against the programme’s intended message.

As the SARA cash aid continues to be rolled out nationwide, the government is now under pressure to strengthen the system to ensure credibility, protect public funds, and restore confidence in social assistance programmes.
