The athletics fraternity, sports enthusiasts and philanthropists have rallied to honour Punjab sprinter Gurindervir Singh, who made history by breaking the national record in the 100 metres sprint with a timing of 10.09 seconds.
A public fund has been established to reward the athlete with a cash prize of Rs 1.25 lakh or more, depending on further contributions. Local activist PS Bhatty, who initiated the move, explained that the initiative is also aimed at promoting athletics, gymnastics and other sports among young people, with a particular focus on encouraging disciplines beyond cricket.
According to details shared by Bhatty, several prominent individuals have already contributed. Dr US Dhaliwal donated Rs 25,000, while Bhatty himself gave Rs 10,000. Sukhwinder Singh contributed Rs 5,000, and another Rs 5,000 was donated by Jatinder Singh through Devinder Kaur Gill of Kolkata. In addition, RK Joshi, President of Geeta Sewa Society, has pledged his support for the initiative.
Organisers confirmed that the first award from the newly-created sports promotion fund will be presented to Gurindervir Singh in recognition of his outstanding national achievement. The date, venue and timing of the felicitation ceremony will be communicated separately to all contributors.
Appealing for continued public support, Bhatty emphasised that the initiative seeks to raise awareness and encourage participation in athletics and gymnastics among the youth. He added that such efforts are vital to nurturing sporting talent and inspiring young people to explore diverse disciplines.
