The leaders of the world's Group of Seven top industrialized nations (G7) are meeting on Monday in the French town of Évian amid the wars in Iran and Ukraine, with close attention being paid to the mood between US President Donald Trump and his partners.
Trump has repeatedly voiced sharp criticism of individual allies and made no secret of his aversion to international groupings.
Trump celebrated his 80th birthday on Sunday and planned to travel to Évian directly after attending a combat sports spectacle featuring cage fights held in front of the White House.
The G7 members are Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, Canada and the United States. France holds the G7 presidency this year.
The consequences of a newly announced US-Iran framework agreement are expected to dominate discussions at the summit. The deal, which includes provisions linked to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, is expected to ease economic disruption caused by the blockade of the vital shipping route for global supplies of oil, gas and fertilizer.
The official signing ceremony is expected to take place on Friday.
Trump is due to meet his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron for bilateral talks in the late afternoon at 5:30 pm (1530 GMT). Summit participants plan to discuss current international challenges over a working dinner in the evening.
The situation in Ukraine is on the agenda for Tuesday.
