Kota Kinabalu: Kapayan Assemblywoman Datuk Jannie Lasimbang and local volunteers in Kg. Nosoob Baru built an innovative eco-gabion system.
Work on the six-tier eco-gabion structure was led by geologist Dr Felix Tongkul and MPP Councillor Philip Chin Jr, serving as a direct response to recent landslide incidents in the area.
The environmentally-friendly slope stabilisation measure uses natural materials and local expertise to provide cost-effective protection against future disasters.
“Climate change is intensifying rainfall patterns and triggering more frequent landslides across Kota Kinabalu,” said Jannie, who personally participated in the construction work.
“We must pursue sustainable, affordable solutions before disaster strikes, combining practical engineering with environmental stewardship and community solidarity,” she said.
The initiative gains added significance as Kapayan prepares to launch the Skuad Sungai volunteer movement in conjunction with World Rivers Day on Sept 28.
The river protection initiative reinforces the constituency’s commitment to long-term environmental guardianship.
In recognition of recent landslide tragedies that claimed lives in the region, this year’s Pesta Sungai Kapayan has been cancelled as a mark of respect for the victims.
“These grassroots efforts prove that effective solutions can emerge from within our own communities,” Jannie said.
“Our responsibility extends beyond disaster response, we must build a future where people and nature thrive in harmony,” she added.
