Villagers in Kampung Bagan Baru, Jong and Jagor share their experiences of the 3.4-magnitude earthquake felt near Gerik, Perak.
IPOH: A 3.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Temenggor, Gerik around midnight was felt by residents in several areas around Gerik, including Kampung Bagan Baru, Kampung Jong and Kampung Jagor.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the weak earthquake occurred at 12.06 am at coordinates 5.5 degrees north and 101.3 degrees east.
Several residents also took to Facebook to share their experiences in the ‘Kami Orang Gerik Original’ (K.O.G.O) group, saying they felt their beds, windows and house structures shake during the tremor.
Kampung Bagan Baru resident Mas Zaizeli Ibrahim said he became aware of the incident after his home’s closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera captured a sound at 12.06 am, while he also felt his bed and windows shaking.
“I thought there was a ghost on the roof. I went outside to shine a light on the roof, only to find all my neighbours had come out because they felt the shaking too,” he said, as shared in the Facebook group.
Meanwhile, Kampung Jagor resident Muhd Nafis said the tremor felt as though something was moving beneath the ground.
Kampung Jong resident Mahani Zahedin said she initially thought the noise was caused by something moving on the roof of her house.
“We felt it in Kampung Jong too. I thought something was running around on the roof,” she said.
Another Kampung Jong resident, Zamzidah Mat Amin, said she also felt the tremor just as she was about to go to sleep, initially thinking something had fallen onto the roof or window of her house.
“I was dizzy, like everything was swaying. I thought I was the only one who felt it, but this morning everyone was talking about the earthquake,” she said.
A Bernama check of the K.O.G.O Facebook group found several other residents sharing their experiences of the tremor, while some said they heard a noise before realising that an earthquake had occurred.
Earlier, MetMalaysia said the tremor was felt around Gerik, with the epicentre located 9 kilometres (km) northeast of Hulu Perak at a depth of 10 km.
