GLASGOW - The success of weightlifter Muhammad Erry Hidayat in delivering the country’s third gold medal, coupled with two lawn bowls representatives advancing to their respective finals, capped another productive day for the national contingent on the fourth day of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games today.
Muhammad Erry stole the limelight after capturing the men’s 79-kilogramme (kg) title with a total lift of 331kg, clinching his maiden Commonwealth Games gold after settling for silver in the 73kg event at Birmingham 2022.
The 26-year-old produced lifts of 147kg in the snatch and 184kg in the clean and jerk, with his clean and jerk effort and overall total both set new Commonwealth Games records at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) Armadillo.
The triumph was extra meaningful as Muhammad Erry emulated his father, Hidayat Hamidon, who won gold at the Kuala Lumpur 1998 Commonwealth Games.
Muhammad Erry’s victory also handed Malaysia its third gold medal of the Games after fellow lifters Mohamad Aniq Kasdan and Muhamad Aznil Bidin had earlier emerged victorious in the men’s 60kg and 65kg categories respectively on Sunday (July 26).
There was more good news from the lawn bowls camp over at the SEC, with men’s singles player Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple and the women’s pairs combination of Aleena Ahmad Nawawi and Syafiqa Haidar Afif Abdul Rahman storming into their respective finals.
Izzat Shameer will face England’s Sam Tolchard while Aleena-Syafiqa will battle England’s Amy Pharaoh-Sian Honnor in the finals tomorrow morning.
Meanwhile, Malaysia's men’s 3x3 basketball team created history by advancing to the quarter-finals in their Commonwealth Games debut after finishing runners-up in Group B.
Malaysia, represented by Chang Zi Fueng, Chong Zhen Yang, Ting Chun Hong and Ooi Xian Fu, wrapped up the group stage with a commanding 21-15 victory over Jamaica, having earlier defeated Fiji, Kenya and Singapore before suffering a narrow 19-21 defeat to defending champions England.
Malaysia will next face hosts Scotland in the quarter-finals tomorrow, with the winners progressing to a semi-final meeting with Australia.
At the pool, national para swimmer Abdul Halim Mohammad finished sixth in the men’s 100m breaststroke SB9 final after clocking one minute and 16.41 seconds (s).
All eyes will now be on Malaysia’s campaign tomorrow, with para long jump ace Datuk Abdul Latif Romly set to compete in the men's T20 long jump, in addition to Izzat Shameer and the women’s pairs team bidding to ensure Malaysia can achieve its five-gold target.
Malaysia currently sits seventh in the medal standings with three gold and two silver medals.
Defending champions Australia continue to dominate the medal standings with 26 gold, 13 silver and 20 bronze medals, followed by England (8-13-11) and Canada (7-8-6). - BERNAMA
