GLOBE Telecom Inc. is seeing opportunities to support the Philippines’ proposed technology corridor as the government explores how the country can participate in the emerging global technology ecosystem under the Pax Silica initiative.
Globe President and CEO Carl Cruz said the private sector would have an important role in identifying where Philippine businesses could contribute to Pax Silica.
“We see Pax Silica as an important conversation for the country, and the private sector should be part of it,” Cruz said in a statement. “Philippine companies already bring different capabilities to the table, and there is value in looking at how these can complement the government’s efforts as the opportunities become clearer.”
The proposed Philippine Technology Corridor includes potential nodes for advanced manufacturing in New Clark City, integrated circuit design and innovation in Metro Manila, artificial intelligence (AI) compute and cloud infrastructure in Batangas, a Pacific-facing connectivity gateway in Aurora, critical minerals in Mindanao and a potential semiconductor fabrication hub in Bulacan.
Trade Undersecretary Ceferino Rodolfo has said the proposed nodes would build on industries and capabilities that the country had already been developing.
For Globe, connectivity infrastructure could serve as a foundation for several of these technology-intensive activities particularly since AI, cloud computing and advanced manufacturing require reliable digital networks and data infrastructure.
“Our role is to make sure that, where connectivity is needed, we are ready to support,” Cruz said.
“This is a broader national effort, and each industry will have something different to contribute. What is important at this stage is that the private sector is engaged in the conversation and [is] looking at where it can meaningfully help.”
The telecommunications company said its potential role would include fiberization, connectivity and data centers as government and businesses determine how Philippine capabilities could fit into the broader technology ecosystem.
While welcoming the opportunities presented by Pax Silica, Globe noted that projects under this regional collaboration would need to take into account environmental, resource, geopolitical and other considerations.
The company said sustained dialogue among government, businesses, academe and other stakeholders was important in determining where Philippine industries could contribute as plans for the initiative develop.
Globe shares on Friday closed at P1,554.00 each, up by P19.00, or 1.24 percent.
