SEN. Bong Go said tennis star Alexandra “Alex” Eala’s historic breakthrough on the international stage could spark a revival in Philippine sports.
”Today, Filipinos, young and old, see new possibilities because of Alex. In fact, her influence reaches far beyond the tennis court,” Go said in his co-sponsorship speech on Aug. 5, congratulating Eala for winning her first Women’s Tennis Association Tour singles title at the 2026 Mubadala DC Open.
Eala’s victory, Go added, could boost the popularity of racket sports in the country.
”We can say that her successes were key to the resurgence of racket sports in the country. Even the growing popularity of pickleball, padel, badminton and other racket sports is likely to benefit from the excitement generated by Alex’s historic achievements,” he said.
Go, chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, said Eala’s success underscores the importance of providing young athletes with sustained support, training opportunities and pathways to compete at the national and international levels.
”Alex’s historic victory should inspire us to strengthen grassroots sports programs further and ensure that every talented Filipino athlete is allowed to succeed,” he said.
He commended private institutions and organizations that support Filipino athletes, stressing that sustained cooperation between government and the private sector is crucial to building a stronger sports-development system.
”Thank you also to the private sector that is helping our athletes. When the private sector and the government work together, our athletes will go far,” Go said.
Beyond producing elite athletes, Go said sports programs play a critical role in promoting physical fitness, discipline and positive development among young Filipinos.
He particularly emphasized the role of sports in keeping young people away from illegal drugs and other harmful activities.
”We recognize the important role that sports play in our society because I believe it is an effective way to keep our young people away from evil elements, such as illegal drugs,” Go said.
”As I always say: Get into sports, stay away from illegal drugs, to keep us healthy and fit,” he added.
