SEN. Bong Go has urged the government and private sector to strengthen support for sports tourism as the Philippines prepares to host major international competitions in 2027, including the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup in Cebu.
During Senate deliberations on the proposed 2027 budgets of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Games and Amusements Board on Oct. 14, Go said international sporting events could boost tourism, generate economic activity and showcase destinations beyond Metro Manila.
He cited the Philippines’ hosting of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, which contributed an estimated P5 billion to the country’s gross domestic product, as evidence of the economic benefits of major sporting events.
“The impact was truly significant. Furthermore, we were able to showcase the skill and passion of Filipinos in the sport of basketball,” Go said.
The Philippines will host the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup in Cebu City in July 2027, marking its first staging of the continent’s premier women’s basketball championship. Games will be held at the new SM Seaside Cebu Arena.
Go also cited recent international competitions, including the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship and the WTA 125 Philippine Women’s Open, as opportunities to promote the country as a destination for world-class sporting events.
Other events lined up for 2027 include the World Wushu Championships in Manila, the inaugural SEA Plus Youth Games and additional international tennis tournaments.
Go called for closer coordination among the PSC, Department of Tourism, local governments, sports organizations and private businesses to maximize the benefits of hosting competitions.
He also pushed for regionalization of sports facilities and training programs, saying events held outside the capital could expand opportunities for local athletes while bringing visitors and economic activity to the provinces.
“The Philippines is truly beautiful,” Go said, urging Filipinos to support local sporting events and explore destinations across the country.
He said sports tourism could serve a dual purpose of promoting the Philippines internationally and encouraging more young Filipinos to participate in sports.
