LAHAD DATU: The State government remains committed to preserving and uplifting Sabah’s rich cultural diversity, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

In his speech, Hajiji said the ongoing initiatives aim to strengthen cultural identity while simultaneously boosting Sabah’s tourism sector.

He noted that continuous efforts are being made to enhance cultural heritage preservation and to further drive the growth of the State’s tourism industry.

“These efforts are not in vain, as we have seen steady growth in tourist arrivals every year, particularly after the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Last year alone, Sabah recorded 3.14 million tourist arrivals, both domestic and international. This achievement is the result of the unity and peace we continue to enjoy today.

“Therefore, I urge the people of Sabah to preserve unity and not be influenced by irresponsible parties attempting to sow division,” he said when officiating the Festival Vaganza Etnik (Food and Culture) Lahad Datu 2025 on Monday.

His speech was delivered by Deputy Chief Minister III cum State Minister of Works, Datuk Ir. Shahelmey Yahya.

Hajiji also praised the organisation of the festival, saying it helps to promote culture, traditional food, and the unique identity of Sabah’s diverse ethnic communities.

He added that programmes like this demonstrate that districts such as Lahad Datu have the potential to become key drivers of tourism and economic development in the state.

“Such events are important to unite people of various ethnicities, strengthen national identity, and promote harmony by celebrating diversity as a source of strength.

“The festival also serves as a catalyst for economic growth through arts and culture, giving a positive boost to the local economy,” he added.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Festival Vaganza Etnik (Food and Culture) Lahad Datu 2025, Datuk Mizma Appehdullah, said the event was born out of discussions with Lahad Datu District Officer Firuz Idzualdeen Mohd Dzul to create a signature event representing the district’s identity.

He said the programme aimed to celebrate the beauty and diversity of Lahad Datu’s many ethnic groups through traditional food, dance, and attire, while serving as a platform to showcase and promote the unique cultures of the local communities.

“Lahad Datu is not only blessed with natural treasures such as Danum Valley, Blue Ring Reef, and Menara Kayangan, but also with the richness of its multicultural heritage.

“Hence, this programme was created to combine the beauty and traditions of Lahad Datu’s multiracial society,” he said.

Mizma added that the festival also served as a platform to strengthen unity among the district’s various communities, while offering opportunities for small traders to generate income and expand their businesses.

“I hope this event will receive recognition and financial support from the state government so it can be further improved in the future,” he added.

The Festival Vaganza Etnik (Food and Culture) Lahad Datu 2025 was held over three days beginning Sept 28, featuring a variety of activities for visitors.
