LAHAD DATU: A 61-year-old man was sentenced to three months’ jail and fined RM6,000 by the Session Court here on Monday for carrying an illegal immigrant.

The accused was charged under Section 55E(1) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 before Judge Suhaila Selag.

The prosecution, led by Mohd Sharifuddin Salim from the Immigration Department proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.

The accused opted to pay the fine.

A Toyota Hilux involved in the case was also forfeited to the government through the Sabah Immigration Department under Section 49A(5) of the same Act.

The case was investigated by the Enforcement Investigation Unit of the Lahad Datu Immigration Office, headed by Mohd Auzal Khan Bakri.

In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the Sabah Immigration Department said this action is part of its ongoing efforts to combat illegal immigration.

The department emphasised that it will take stern action against anyone found harbouring, employing, or protecting illegal immigrants to ensure the country’s stability and safety.

Members of the public are urged to report any information about illegal immigrants in their areas to enable prompt and effective action.
