A 71-year-old female government retiree lost RM42,580 after being duped by an online money-doubling scheme advertised on Facebook, police said.

KUALA TERENGGANU: A female government retiree lost RM42,580 after being duped by an online non-existent money-doubling scheme syndicate.

Kuala Terengganu District Police Chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said that on October 7, the 71-year-old victim saw an advertisement for a money-doubling scheme on Facebook.

He said the interested victim contacted a suspect known as “Ustaz Hilmi Firdausi” via WhatsApp.

“The deceived victim made five payments totaling RM42,580 using her savings, and was promised a return of RM300,000. However, after making the payments, the suspect asked the victim to make an additional payment of RM50,000 to obtain the profits,” he said in a statement today.

Azli said the victim, growing suspicious, refused to follow the instructions and lodged a police report at 11:06 PM last Thursday.

He stated that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
