A meeting of members of the Baba Budha Ji Granthi Sabha, Phagwara (Granthi Singhs of the Phagwara circle), was held today at Gurudwara Sukhchainan Sahib, Phagwara, under the leadership of president Balbir Singh. The meeting was convened in protest against the newly formulated anti-sacrilege law passed by the Punjab government led by the Aam Aadmi Party, relating to sacrilege incidents involving Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

Around 35–40 members participated in the meeting, where concerns were raised regarding the provisions and framing of the law. Speakers alleged that the general public in Punjab is not fully aware of the contents of the Anti-Sacrilege Law and claimed that there is a perception that the issue is being viewed as a political tussle between the ruling party and the opposition Shiromani Akali Dal.

Kulwant Singh, general secretary of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, while addressing the gathering, said the law is currently being accepted only within Punjab, whereas in other states like Haryana, the Sikh community would follow regulations framed by the SGPC. He also stated that there are certain flaws in the legislation, alleging that it was not discussed with the Akal Takht before its formulation and therefore requires amendments.

He further announced that a larger meeting on the issue will be organised by the SGPC on May 31, 2026 at Baba Bakala, where jathedars and granthi singhs from the Sikh community are expected to participate and deliberate on the matter.

The participants reiterated their demand for wider consultation with religious authorities before implementing such sensitive legislation and urged the government to address their concerns.
