PAS will assume leadership of Perikatan Nasional (PN) following the resignation of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as chairman of the coalition, according to PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang. He said the move is grounded in a formal party mandate adopted earlier by PAS through its highest decision-making assembly.

Speaking in Marang on January 23, 2026, Abdul Hadi explained that a resolution passed at a previous PAS Muktamar had already authorised the party to lead the PN coalition. He indicated that this mandate remains valid and forms the basis for PAS continuing to head the alliance after Muhyiddin stepped down from the post on January 1, 2026.

Abdul Hadi, who is also the Member of Parliament for Marang, made the remarks after delivering a Duha lecture at Masjid Rusila. He said the party’s stance was clear, as the resolution explicitly empowered PAS to chair the coalition when circumstances required it. According to him, this decision was collectively agreed upon by party delegates and reflects PAS’s internal consensus on its role within PN.

When asked about Muhyiddin’s future position within the coalition, Abdul Hadi said no decision has been finalised. He added that PAS has already identified a candidate for the PN chairmanship but declined to provide further details at this stage. He stressed that discussions on leadership appointments must follow proper coalition procedures.

Abdul Hadi also revealed that PAS has yet to receive an official invitation to attend a PN meeting to formally deliberate on the appointment of a new chairman. He attributed the delay to ongoing administrative and management matters within the coalition, rather than political disagreement or instability.

Despite the absence of a formal meeting, he expressed confidence that the issue would be resolved soon. Abdul Hadi said discussions within PN were progressing and anticipated that the leadership question would be settled within one to two weeks once logistical matters were addressed.

Muhyiddin’s resignation earlier in January marked a significant development for PN, which comprises several parties with differing ideological priorities. PAS has been a key component of the coalition and has played a prominent role in shaping its direction since its formation.
