KUALA LUMPUR – Perikatan Nasional (PN) will confirm Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation and appoint a new chairman at its Extraordinary Supreme Council meeting this Thursday, following five years of his leadership.
The matter was conveyed through a notice issued by PN Deputy Secretary-General Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, dated January 23.
“Referring to the above (extraordinary meeting notice) and related letters from Gerakan President and PN Deputy Chairman Datuk Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai, as well as PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, dated January 7 and 10 respectively.
“Under Clause 12.2 of PN’s constitution, an Extraordinary MT Meeting may be convened upon written request to the Secretary-General by at least half of the member parties.
“The Secretary-General must then call the meeting within 14 days from the date of receiving such request,” the notice stated.
According to the same notice, PN is set to elect a meeting chairman from among its deputy chairmen, in line with Clause 8.3(II)(b) of the coalition’s constitution.
The meeting, scheduled for 8.30pm at Gerakan’s headquarters here, will confirm the resignation of PN Chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin before appointing a successor.
Muhyiddin’s resignation and the appointment of a new chairman will be carried out under Clause 8.3(I)(b) of PN’s constitution.
Recently, Muhyiddin—who is also Bersatu President and Pagoh MP—was reported to have announced his resignation as PN Chairman, effective January 1.
The former Prime Minister stepped down after five years leading PN since the coalition was officially registered on August 7, 2020.
Besides Bersatu, PN’s main component parties include PAS and Gerakan.
Following his resignation, speculation has mounted over potential successors, with names mentioned including PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang and Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Moktar.
Previously, there were calls from PAS, including its Youth Chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, urging that the PN chairmanship be given to PAS.
Tensions between PAS and Bersatu have become more pronounced following political upheaval in Perlis, which saw PAS assemblyman for Sanglang, Mohd Shukri Ramli, resign as Menteri Besar. - January 26, 2026
