LARUT MP Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin will continue to serve as Opposition Leader in the Dewan Rakyat until Parliament receives formal written confirmation regarding his status, Speaker Johari Abdul has said.
Hamzah’s position has come under scrutiny after his expulsion from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, yet the Speaker stressed that no official notification has been submitted either by Bersatu or the opposition coalition to warrant any procedural change.
“So far, we have not received anything. That means his status remains the same. Only if we receive it in black and white will we make an announcement. In any case, I am waiting.
“As long as we have not received anything, there is not much I can do now…we have two days (of the sitting) left this week and further developments may be known next week,” he told reporters after attending the Parliament of Malaysia’s breaking-of-fast event at the Parliament building.
Hamzah Zainudin, who is also the Member of Parliament for Larut, was recently dismissed from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia following an internal party dispute.
Earlier, Perikatan Nasional deputy secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan indicated that the opposition bloc, led by Perikatan Nasional, had decided that Malaysian Islamic Party would assume the post of Opposition Leader, with the name of the Member of Parliament to be announced in due course.
However, until formal documentation is received and verified by the Speaker’s office, Hamzah’s seating position and official role in the Dewan Rakyat remain unchanged. - February 25, 2026
