Hearts name Belgian manager as Derek McInnes replacement

  • Hearts have officially appointed Wouter Vrancken, a 47-year-old Belgian, as their new head coach on a two-year contract.
  • Vrancken joins as a free agent after successfully guiding Sint-Truiden to a third-placed finish in the Belgian top flight and has been named Belgian manager of the year twice.
  • He succeeds Derek McInnes, who departed to join Rangers after leading Hearts to an impressive season where they narrowly missed out on the William Hill Premiership title.
  • Hearts led the Scottish Premiership for much of the last season, but ultimately lost the title-deciding match 3-1 to Celtic at Celtic Park.
  • The final game was marred by a pitch invasion by Celtic fans following their third goal, though the SPFL later confirmed the referee had officially ended the match rather than abandoning it.
