Heavy rain triggers flash floods, gridlocked traffic on main KL roads

KUALA LUMPUR – A heavy downpour this evening has led to flash floods and gridlocked traffic across several main roads in the capital.

The Kuala Lumpur command and control centre reported congestion around Jalan Genting-Klang, Jalan Istana, Jalan Kinabalu, Jalan Sg Besi, Jalan Tun Razak and Jalan Lingkaran Tengah 2.

Earlier today, Astro Radio Traffic said traffic was slow due to stagnant water near a Shell station along Jalan Genting-Klang, leading to congestion from Bulatan Pahang.

TikTok user @leojualrumah shared a video displaying flooded areas with trapped cars.


As of 6.30pm, the Selangor Drainage and Irrigation Department recorded rising water levels in several areas, including Bandar Klang (3.49m), Selat Muara (3.69m), Taman Desa Kemuning (3.0m), Kg Rantau Panjang (3.93m) and Sri Aman (7.55m). 

These areas have been categorised as “red,” indicating a significant risk of flooding.

Earlier, the Meteorological Department issued a thunderstorm and heavy rain warning for the peninsula’s west coast, Sabah and Sarawak until 5pm.

Affected areas include Perlis, Kedah (Langkawi and Kubang Pasu), Penang (Southwest and Northeast), Pahang (Rompin), Selangor (Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak, Petaling and Hulu Langat), Kuala Lumpur, Negri Sembilan (Jelebu, Seremban and Rembau), Melaka, Johor, Sarawak (Sri Aman, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Kapit, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang), Sabah’s interior (Sipitang, Tenom, Kuala Penyu and Beaufort) and west coast (Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu and Tuaran), and Labuan. – May 7, 2024
