The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained two additional individuals—a company's chairman and the director of a subcontractor company—in connection with a corruption case exceeding RM1 billion involving a highway project in the Klang Valley.

Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin granted the remand order for the two men, who are in their 40s and 50s, following the MACC's application at the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court today. The company chairman, reportedly holding the title 'Datuk', will be held until Saturday, July 6, while the director of the subcontractor company will be held until Thursday, July 4.

According to MACC sources, the suspects were detained between 9 PM and midnight last night after they appeared to give testimony at the MACC headquarters. "They are suspected of offering bribes amounting to over RM200,000 to officials of a statutory body as an inducement for securing work on a highway construction project that was initially undertaken by another company," the source revealed to Bernama. The suspects are also believed to have bribed officials of a highway concession company for the same purpose.

Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hashim, senior director of the MACC Investigation Division, confirmed the arrests when contacted and stated that the investigations are being conducted under Section 16(b)(A) of the MACC Act 2009. This section pertains to the offense of soliciting or receiving gratification as an inducement or reward for performing or abstaining from performing any act in one's official capacity.

In a related development, Hishamuddin also confirmed that three other suspects previously remanded in connection with this investigation have been released. This includes the CEO of the highway concession company, who was released on bail amounting to RM150,000 after the expiration of the remand period.

This case is part of a broader effort by the MACC to crack down on corruption and ensure transparency in public projects. The agency has been actively investigating allegations of bribery and corruption within various sectors, emphasizing the importance of integrity and accountability in public service. The ongoing investigation into the highway project is a testament to the MACC's commitment to addressing high-profile corruption cases, aiming to restore public confidence in the integrity of public institutions and the proper use of public funds.

As the investigation continues, the MACC remains vigilant in its pursuit of justice, ensuring that those involved in corrupt practices are held accountable for their actions. The agency urges anyone with information regarding this case or similar instances of corruption to come forward and assist in their efforts to eradicate corruption from all levels of society.
