The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained another individual, the chief assistant director of a statutory body, in connection with a significant corruption case involving RM1.6 billion related to two highway projects in the Klang Valley.

MACC sources revealed that the suspect, a man in his 40s, was apprehended at the MACC headquarters at 10 pm on June 27 after his statement was recorded. “The suspect is believed to have accepted a bribe exceeding RM146,000 from a company in exchange for securing a work contract related to the construction of a highway,” they disclosed.

This latest arrest brings the total number of individuals detained in this case to ten. The suspect was remanded for four days until July 1, following a remand order issued by Magistrate Nazira Adlin Ahmad Khairul Razi at the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court this morning.

The arrest of the chief assistant director follows the earlier detention of nine other individuals, including a chief executive officer (CEO) and two top management officials of a highway concession company. These detentions are part of the ongoing MACC investigation into the corruption allegations surrounding the highway projects.

In a related development, sources confirmed that Magistrate Nazira Adlin also approved the MACC’s request to extend the remand of four suspects, including the CEO of the highway concessionaire. These individuals, who were initially arrested on Monday, will remain in custody until July 2 to facilitate further investigations.

MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations) Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya confirmed both the new suspect’s arrest and the extension of the remand orders for the previously detained individuals. He stated that the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009, which deals with offenses related to accepting gratification.

The MACC's efforts underscore its commitment to tackling corruption at all levels and ensuring the integrity of large-scale infrastructure projects. The agency continues to urge anyone with information related to the case to come forward and assist in the investigation. The detentions and ongoing inquiries highlight the MACC's dedication to upholding transparency and accountability in public service and corporate governance.
