Hilary Knight has addressed Donald Trump’s recent joke, calling it “distasteful” while making clear she will not shoulder responsibility for explaining it.
The USA women’s hockey captain was asked about the remark following renewed public debate around the team’s achievements.
Rather than escalating the exchange, she chose a measured but firm response. Knight’s comments have since gained significant attention across the sporting landscape.

Hilary Knight responds to Donald Trump’s joke
Speaking at the Seattle Torrent Gold Medalists’ press conference, Hilary Knight said: “No, I just thought the joke was distasteful and unfortunate.
“I think the way women are represented, it’s a great teaching point to really shine light on how women should be champions for their amazing feats.”
She added: “Now, I have to, or anybody has to sit in front of you and explain someone else’s behaviour. It’s not my responsibility.”
Knight’s stance was direct. She acknowledged her disappointment while refusing to become the spokesperson for someone else’s remarks.
The emphasis instead was placed on representation and ensuring that women’s sporting accomplishments are treated with the respect they deserve.
Hilary Knight says the team’s success must not be overshadowed
Hilary Knight also shifted the focus firmly back to her teammates, stating: “These women [her teammates] are amazing, and whatever is going on should never outshine or minimize their work and our success on the world stage.
“This is the best American women’s hockey team we’ve ever put together on a world stage when the lights have been the brightest,” Knight concluded.
The captain’s message reinforced the broader point that external controversy should not detract from the squad’s achievements. The USA women’s team has consistently delivered on the biggest stage, and Knight made clear that their performance and preparation remain the priority.
Rather than prolonging the political angle, Knight’s comments framed the issue as one of respect and accountability. Her response was composed but unmistakably firm.
In doing so, she ensured the conversation returned to where she believes it belongs: on the ice and on the accomplishments of her team.
