Traffic builds on the PLUS as holidaymakers return, with smart lanes opened to ease congestion and improve flow today
PETALING JAYA: Traffic on the North–South Expressway (PLUS) began to slow from 1.20pm today as holidaymakers started heading home on the final day of the public holiday.
Although schools nationwide remain closed for the mid-term break, the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) reported a sharp increase in traffic volume as workers return to major cities.
To help ease congestion, 30 Smart Lane sections were activated along the E1 expressway from 12.50pm, allowing motorists to use the emergency lane in selected areas to boost road capacity.
Northbound traffic is moving slowly at several hotspots in Perak and Kedah, particularly between Slim River and Bidor, Gopeng and Simpang Pulai, as well as along the Menora Tunnel stretch.
Southbound travellers are experiencing similar delays from Kepala Batas to the Hutan Kampung Toll Plaza, through the hilly Gua Tempurung–Tapah route, and along the busy Juru–Bandar Baharu corridor.
Among the activated Smart Lane sections are Km289.4 to Km292.6 between Putra Mahkota and Southville, and Km194.5 to Km184.0 from Ayer Keroh to Jasin.
Other key Smart Lane zones in operation include Km22.9 to Km21.0 from R&R Dengkil to Putrajaya, and Km439.5 to Km435.5 between Rawang and Sungai Buaya.
Despite the heavy traffic, weather conditions across the peninsula remain fair, ensuring good visibility for motorists.
Drivers are advised to follow all road signage when using Smart Lanes, signal clearly before merging, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
