A RESOLUTION has been filed in the House of Representatives honoring tennis ace Alex Eala for her international achievements.
The resolution, filed by Laguna Rep. Ann Matibag, also proposes to name Eala as the Honorary Sampaguita Goodwill Ambassador of the House.
“For every Filipino who excels on the world stage, there is a story of resilience, humility, and love for country. Alex Eala embodies these values. By proudly carrying the sampaguita with her at Wimbledon, she reminded the world that no matter how far we go, we always carry the Philippines in our hearts,” Matibag said in a statement on Monday.
She said the sampaguita represented “purity, humility, resilience, hope, and unwavering love of country — the very qualities that Alex Eala has demonstrated throughout her journey.” Matibag also supported legislative efforts to recognize San Pedro, Laguna, as the Historic Sampaguita Capital of the Philippines. “This is not only a tribute to our past but also an investment in preserving our culture, strengthening local tourism, and creating greater appreciation for one of our nation’s most cherished symbols,” she said.
“Alex has shown us that greatness and patriotism can go hand in hand. Every victory becomes even more meaningful when it carries the story of the Filipino people. We hope this resolution inspires more Filipinos to proudly wear, celebrate, and share our culture with the world,” Matibag said.
Eala is the first Filipino to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon, ousting defending champion Iga Swiatek along the way. She eventually lost to Italy’s Jasmine Paolini.
