SEN. Bong Go filed on Tuesday Senate Resolution 493, commending Alexandra “Alex” Eala for becoming the first Filipino female tennis player to win a women’s singles main-draw match in the Open Era, and reach the Wimbledon Championships’ fourth round.
The resolution, introduced on July 7 during the Second Regular Session of the 20th Congress, cited Article XIV, Section 19 of the Philippine Constitution, which mandates the State to promote sports and physical education to foster discipline, teamwork and excellence among Filipinos.
It highlighted Eala’s opening-round victory over Mexico’s Renata Zarazúa, 6-1, 6-2, marking the first time a Filipino won a women’s singles main-draw match at Wimbledon in the Open Era.
The resolution also noted Eala’s upset victory over defending champion and World No. 3 Iga Świątek, which propelled her into the round of 16, making her the first Filipino in the Open Era to reach the fourth round of the prestigious Grand Slam tournament.
Go said Eala’s remarkable Wimbledon campaign showcased her exceptional talent, discipline and determination, making her a source of national pride and an inspiration to the Filipino youth.
