The close friend of a 16-year-old teen who died yesterday due to an electrocution incident in Kedah has expressed deep regret for not doing more to save the latter’s life.
Speaking to China Press, Su Junkai (transliteration), said he and the victim, Xu Zhikang, had known each other since they were 10 and later went on to be classmates in secondary school.

Su added that out of the 31 students in their class, him, Xu, and another student were the only Chinese students, which made their bond even stronger.
‘I didn’t do enough to save him’
According to Su, who’s a St. John’s Ambulance member, he was at the scene when Xu and two others were electrocuted during a Nine Emperor God procession in Mergong on Oct 13.
Most of the cases I’ve attended to involved heart attacks or road accidents. But this was the first time I witnessed my classmate being a victim of electrocution.

“While I was trying to save Xu, he was still conscious and kept wanting to get back on his feet, which made me experience deep, conflicting emotions at the time,” he recalled.
Su said even after Xu was admitted to the hospital, he would check on Xu from time to time via phone calls while preparing for his exams.
However, nothing prepared Su for the devastating news of Xu’s death, leaving him with a sense of deep loss and regret over not doing more to save his classmate’s life.

Xu spent a week in the hospital to seek treatment for burns he sustained to 80% of his body.
After undergoing a skin grafting operation that lasted for hours, Xu’s condition deteriorated and he eventually passed away at 2am yesterday (Oct 21).
