Former finance minister Daim Zainuddin expressed his dismay and frustration towards Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim after being charged with failing to comply with a notice from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to declare his assets.
He accused the current government of abusing its powers and betraying the promises of reform. In a press conference held at the court complex, Daim referred to the Prime Minister as a "wolf in sheep's clothing" who claims to be a proponent of reforms but behaves in the opposite manner.
He expressed concern for the fate of the country, stating that he is not overly concerned about his own fate, but rather the well-being of Malaysia. Daim criticized the lack of integrity and good governance within the government, claiming that independent institutions such as the MACC, Attorney-General's Chambers, and Inland Revenue Board have become tools used to pursue political opponents. According to him, laws like the Sedition Act, Communication and Multimedia Act, and Peaceful Assembly Act are freely employed against individuals who criticize the government or Anwar.
He questioned whether this was the "new Malaysia" that was promised to the people. Daim emphasized the importance of Malaysians standing up against Anwar and his regime, asserting that the government should be accountable to its citizens and not the other way around. Earlier, Daim pleaded not guilty to a charge under Section 36(2) of the MACC Act 2009, which relates to failing to comply with an asset declaration notice.
If convicted, he could face a jail term of up to five years and a fine of not more than RM100,000. It is worth mentioning that last week, Daim's wife, Naimah Khalid, also pleaded not guilty to a similar charge in the Kuala Lumpur sessions court. Both cases highlight the alleged lack of compliance with asset declaration notices from the MACC.
