Ian Machado Garry has publicly questioned the legitimacy of Islam Makhachev’s reported hand injury, adding a new layer of intrigue to the UFC welterweight title picture.

The champion has been absent from recent matchmaking discussions after reports emerged that he is dealing with hand problems.

UFC president Dana White confirmed the issue while explaining why Makhachev was not included in the promotion’s upcoming White House event, UFC Freedom 250, scheduled for June 14 in Washington, D.C.

Speculation intensified because the Dagestani star had been linked to several potential opponents for the historic card, including Ilia Topuria.

In a video posted on Instagram on Monday, Garry openly cast doubt on the explanation behind Makhachev’s absence.

“I heard that too [about Makhachev’s hand injury], but I don’t believe it. I don’t know what to believe. I can’t imagine he hurt his hand in the last fight with Jack. Maybe he did it while horse riding?”

The Irish contender continued his criticism, suggesting the champion may simply be avoiding a difficult return.

“I think it’s just excuses. Everything about him now tells me ‘he doesn’t want to fight’. I don’t know if it’s mentally, physically, whatever it’s… He’s doing the typical thing that all champions do when they get the belt.”

‘The Future’ also vowed to change that pattern should he win the belt, claiming he will be an active champion.

Several contenders lining up for Islam Makhachev’s next fight

Makhachev last fought when he defeated Jack Della Maddalena to claim the UFC welterweight title, continuing a dominant run that made him one of the promotion’s most accomplished champions.

After that victory, he publicly called out former champion Kamaru Usman as a possible first defence. However, the landscape has other names to consider.

Garry has thrown himself into the conversation with a strong run of recent performances, while Topuria has also openly pushed for a blockbuster clash with the champion. ‘El Matador’ and the Dagestani star even had a heated exchange on X recently.

Still, until the champion returns from his reported hand issues, the welterweight title picture remains unusually crowded and uncertain.
