While most people celebrate the festive season with family, those in the retail and food & beverage (F&B) industries often have no choice but to work.
Recently, a Malaysian man took to social media to remind those in the service sector to maintain a professional attitude, despite the frantic holiday rush.

“There is absolutely no need to look fierce or to throw things around. Customers do not come to eat for free. They are paying guests,” he shared.
“If you cannot handle the workload, then resign”
In a viral Threads post, the man, who works in the industry himself, noted that he has worked through both days of Chinese New Year, as well as other major holidays like Hari Raya, Independence Day, and even throughout Ramadan while fasting.
He expressed that while he understands how exhausting the industry can be, he believes there is little point in forcing oneself to stay in a role that isn’t a good fit.
“If you cannot handle the workload, then resign. There is no need to force yourself,” he stated.
He added that when dealing with the public all day, employees should avoid appearing hostile. Even if a worker cannot be “extremely friendly,” he suggested that a simple smile is sufficient.

In a follow-up post, he advised peers not to be easily offended and to maintain a polite demeanour, even if the smile feels forced. With eateries expected to be at full capacity this season, he offered his spiritual support and well-wishes to his colleagues.
“Hang in there, especially the Gen Zs like me,” he remarked.
