Tension has been building between Ilia Topuria and Islam Makhachev in recent weeks. The two fighters, along with their camps, have exchanged accusations across social media.

Their proposed bout for UFC Freedom 250 reportedly collapsed just before its official announcement. That late breakdown quickly became a major talking point in the MMA world.

The situation has only fuelled interest in a potential clash. Despite the back and forth, both names remain closely linked as fans continue to push for the fight.

Topuria addressed the situation during an appearance on Spanish TV show El Hormiguero last Thursday. ‘El Matador’ struck a measured tone when discussing his rival.

“Sports-wise it’s an advantage, obviously. A guy who has more weight, who has more stature and everything, it’s an advantage,” the Spaniard said.

“But at this point, what does it matter? It’s a fight that generates interest, the fans want to see it. It’s a fight that even I have an interest in, to fight a guy who has dominated the division for so long.”

He continued: “What better than to fight a person who has all the curriculum that he has?

“I see it sport-wise, I consider him a talent, I consider him a person who has some skills within the Octagon, and to put them together with mine, it could become a very, very interesting fight for everyone.”

Regarding their physical differences, Topuria stands at 5 foot 7, while Makhachev is 5 foot 10, giving the Dagestani champion a notable height advantage.

There is also a weight dynamic at play. Topuria began his career at featherweight and would be making a second move up, while Makhachev has transitioned from lightweight to welterweight with relative ease.

Those factors underline the challenge Topuria is willing to embrace. Despite acknowledging the disadvantages, his focus remains on securing a fight that continues to capture widespread attention.

And he expects to make it real at the end of the year.
