Arman Tsarukyan has sparked fresh debate around Islam Makhachev’s future, suggesting the lightweight champion may not remain at the top for much longer.

Makhachev, now 34, is closely guided by Khabib Nurmagomedov, whose own career ended at 32 following the death of his father Abdulmanap. That influence has led to growing belief that a similar timeline could unfold.

Tsarukyan has now added to that narrative, raising doubts about how many fights remain before a potential retirement.

Speaking on the Full Send Podcast, Tsarukyan suggested Makhachev’s time in the sport is limited when asked about a possible rematch.

“Not really [I see a rematch happening], because he’s gonna retire I think in two fights. One or two fights and he’s gone. So, about me, I’m gonna take over this sport in one year,” the 29-year-old stated.

The pair have history, with Makhachev defeating Tsarukyan by unanimous decision in the Armenian’s UFC debut back in 2019.

They were also expected to fight at UFC 311 last year, but a late withdrawal from ‘Ahalkalakets’ led the promotion to schedule Renato Moicano to face the Dagestani star on short notice.

Why a rematch now looks increasingly unlikely

A second fight between the two appears difficult to arrange under current circumstances.

Makhachev has moved up and is expected to face a top welterweight contender, with names like Ian Machado Garry, Carlos Prates and Michael Morales in the mix.

There is also speculation of a potential bout between the welterweight champion and Ilia Topuria, which was close to materialising for the White House card.

For Tsarukyan, the path would require winning the lightweight title and defending it, leaving any rematch dependent on Makhachev extending his career beyond the timeline that has been suggested.
