Kota Kinabalu: Two undocumented men were sentenced to 12 months’ jail each by the Magistrate’s Court here for committing mischief by cutting cables belonging to a telecommunication company.

Jaib Adli, 26, and Aidil Dahlan, 33, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to jointly committing the offence on June 6, this year, at 1.30am, by the roadside of Mile 10, here.

The charge under Section 431A of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to two years or fine or both, on conviction.

The facts of the case tendered by the prosecution stated that the duo, who were seen cutting the Telekom Malaysia cables, was arrested by police.

Read more The raiding police recovered 17 rolls of cable and cutting tools from them, said the prosecution, adding that the duo were also found to have no identification documents.

Unrepresented, the duo requested for leniency.

The court ordered Jaib and Aidil to serve the sentence from the date of their arrest and to be referred to the Immigration Department thereafter.

Meanwhile, a 47-year-old man claimed trial to similar offence.

Rosleh Salimin was accused of cutting cables also belonging to the Telekom Malaysia at 3.30am, on June 14, at Lorong 24, Manggatal 1 town.

The court fixed July 25 for pre-trial case management and released the accused on a bail of RM2,000 in two sureties.

In another case, a 20-year-old man was charged with shoplifting.

Muhd Arief Haiqal pleaded not guilty to stealing a can of Ghee on June 15, at 1.03pm, at Servay Supermarket in 1Borneo Hypermall.

He was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code.

The court set July 25 for pre-trial case management and released Arief on a bail of RM2,000 in two sureties.
