KUALA TERENGGANU - More than 57,000 illegal immigrants have been detained in 9,700 operations conducted nationwide from Jan 1 to Sept 17, said Immigration Department (JIM) deputy director-general (Operations) Datuk Lokman Effendi Ramli.
He said the illegal immigrants were detained for various offences, while 1,720 employers were also prosecuted for various violations under the Immigration Act 1959/63 during the same period.
"Cumulatively, the Immigration Department conducted three operations every two hours. I also want to remind everyone that prosecution is not limited to foreign nationals, but also employers who violate regulations and the law.
"I would also like to remind those with information or aware of the presence of foreign nationals to report to us officially. Do not act on your own. Provide us with complete information to enable the authorities to carry out their duties accordingly,” he said after the integrated Ops Mega at the Sri Kolam Flats here early today.
Lokman Effendi said the Terengganu JIM, in collaboration with the National Security Council (MKN) and the Civil Defence Force (APM) of Terengganu, inspected 133 foreign nationals and detained 19 illegal immigrants under Ops Mega today.
He said those detained comprised a Bangladeshi man, 14 Myanmar nationals and four Indonesians, all aged between one month and 50 years.
"It was learned that seven Myanmar women, including the mother of the month-old infant, had just entered the country through unauthorised agents to be with their husbands who are already here,” he said. - BERNAMA
