Additional Deputy Commissioner Narender Kumar has assumed the charge of Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation (MC), Rohtak, but an immediate challenge before him is to improve the Swachh Survekshan ranking as the survey is round the corner. Rohtak slipped to the fifth position in the state rankings last year, losing its tag as Haryana’s cleanest city.

Soon after formally taking charge on Wednesday, the Commissioner held a detailed meeting with officials and branch heads to review sanitation arrangements, ongoing development works, pending projects and the public grievance redressal system. Stressing the need for accountability and efficiency, he said improving cleanliness standards and accelerating development works would remain his priorities in the coming months.

Stating that the MC’s primary objective is to provide timely and efficient civic services to residents, Narender directed officials to ensure there is no unnecessary delay in resolving citizens’ issues and instructed staff members to maintain courteous behaviour while dealing with the public. Every complaint and application, he said, should be addressed on a priority basis.

Focusing on sanitation, the Commissioner ordered officials to strengthen cleanliness drives across all wards, launch special cleaning campaigns in major markets and ensure continuous sweeping of main roads. He also emphasised improving the night sanitation system so that the city appeared clean and organised during morning hours. Garbage collection points across the city are to be removed in a phased manner.

Keeping the approaching monsoon season in view, Narender directed officials to complete the cleaning of drains and sewer lines before rains begin to prevent waterlogging in low-lying areas. He warned that negligence or indifference at any level would not be tolerated.

The Commissioner also said that beautification projects and infrastructure development works would be expedited to transform the overall image of Rohtak city.

Later, he conducted a surprise inspection of the MC offices and the Citizen Facilitation Centre. During the visit, he reviewed civic services, staff attendance, work efficiency and grievance handling mechanisms. He instructed officials to implement a token system at the facilitation centre for smoother public service delivery.

During the inspection, the Commissioner heard grievances of several citizens, including an elderly woman and directed officials to resolve her issue immediately.
