Mediterranean landscapes, transparent waters, pine forests and villages clinging to the hillsides… Still relatively unknown, this island in the Saronic Gulf is a verdant retreat where time seems to stand still.

In Greece, just a short distance from the Peloponnese and opposite the small port of Galatas, the island of Poros unfolds like a postcard scene. Barely a hundred metres separate it from the mainland, yet the sense of escape is complete. Between the shimmering sea, boats drifting gently across the water and rolling hills answering one another in the distance, the island offers a Mediterranean landscape of remarkable harmony. One of the more discreet Saronic Islands, Poros charms visitors with its authenticity.

The origins of an island between land and sea

Poros is an island in the Saronic Gulf, located very close to Argolis in the Peloponnese. With a modest area of 33 km², it makes up the majority of the municipality of the same name.

The island has a distinctive feature: it is made up of two separate land masses. On one side lies Sphairia, a small volcanic island where the main town and its lively harbour are concentrated. On the other is Kalavria, much larger and wilder, separated only by a narrow channel a few metres wide. While the former is bustling and vibrant, the latter feels more rugged, with orchards, hills and isolated hamlets. This contrast is part of what gives Poros its unique charm.

What to do in Poros?

Enjoy the local way of life

In the morning, settle onto a terrace overlooking the harbour in Poros Town. A Greek coffee, a few pastries and the peaceful ballet of the boats are all you need to begin the day. Here, everything moves slowly, in rhythm with the sea.

For lunch, choose a waterside taverna. Grilled fish, local olive oil, fresh salads… The cuisine is simple, yet deeply rooted in Greek gastronomy.

Relax on beaches with crystal-clear waters

To enjoy the clear waters and sunshine, Love Beach is undoubtedly one of the island’s most charming spots. Surrounded by pine trees and home to a small chapel by the sea, it offers a peaceful, almost intimate vision of Greece.

More lively, Russian Bay is popular for its vibrant atmosphere and historical remains. In summer, the mood becomes more festive, making it the ideal place to enjoy with friends.

For greater tranquillity, head north to Vagionia. This pebble beach, tucked away in a wild bay, is perfect for swimming or exploring the seabed with a mask and snorkel.

Explore an unspoilt natural landscape

The island’s interior reveals an entirely different side of Poros. Dense pine forests blanket the hills, offering spectacular views over the sea and the mainland. As you climb higher, one viewpoint follows another, blurring the boundaries between island and continent.

Discover the island’s history

On the heights, the ruins of the Temple of Poseidon recall the ancient past of Poros. Though now heavily weathered, the site still retains a very special atmosphere.

Further down, the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi invites visitors to pause in peaceful surroundings. Between its cloister and richly decorated church, the monastery offers a timeless escape.

Take to the water

Like many Greek islands, Poros is also best discovered from the sea. Hire a boat, paddleboard or kayak to follow the coastline and reach more secluded coves. The water is clear, calm and perfect for a simple getaway immersed in nature.
