Nestled in the Gulf of Naples, the island of Ischia reveals volcanic landscapes, natural thermal springs and picturesque villages. A still largely unspoilt Italian escape to discover this summer.
Just a two-hour flight from Paris and you’ll find yourself on a volcanic island that seems to have kept all its secrets intact. Tucked away in the Gulf of Naples, Ischia brings together, within just a few square miles, everything one could hope for in the perfect Italian getaway: beaches lined with hot springs, flower-filled alleyways, cuisine rooted in tradition and breathtaking views. It is difficult to leave without feeling an irresistible urge to return. Here is an overview of several fantastic spots not to be missed!
The Aragonese Castle: a spectacular setting overlooking the sea
Once you’ve settled in, head first to the iconic Aragonese Castle. Connected to the village of Ischia Ponte by a long stone bridge and rising 115 metres high, this fortress perched on a rocky islet looks as though it has stepped straight out of an Italian fairytale. From the moment you enter, the site impresses with its ancient ramparts, mysterious passageways and sun-drenched terraces.
As you explore, the views over the Tyrrhenian Sea become increasingly striking. Between the old stone walls, hidden chapels and hanging gardens, the place has an almost unreal atmosphere.

A botanical garden worthy of a Mediterranean dream
Another wonder to discover on the island of Ischia is undoubtedly the La Mortella Gardens, offering a truly enchanting stroll. Created by writer Susana Walton (wife of the composer William Walton), this botanical haven is home to an astonishing variety of exotic plants, orchids and lily-covered ponds.
Everything here invites you to slow down. Shaded pathways wind between waterfalls and fragrant flowers. The peaceful atmosphere contrasts perfectly with the island’s lively beaches. It is the ideal spot to enjoy a quiet moment in a setting of rare beauty.

Mount Epomeo: a hike with views over Capri
Nature lovers can climb to the summit of Mount Epomeo, the island’s highest point. Starting from the village of Fontana, the trail passes through vineyards, volcanic paths and cliffs shaped by time.
Once at the top, the view is more than worth the effort. The panorama stretches across Capri, the Bay of Naples and, on clear days, even the Amalfi Coast. This accessible walk reveals a much wilder side of Ischia.

Natural thermal springs: luxury, Ischia style
In addition to its dreamlike beaches, Ischia is also renowned for its volcanic thermal waters. Among the island’s most memorable experiences are the Cavascura thermal baths, where visitors are immersed in an atmosphere that feels almost ancient.
Meanwhile, in the town of Forio, the Poseidon Thermal Gardens attract those dreaming of a relaxing day by the sea. Heated pools, a private beach and tropical gardens await.

How many days should you allow to explore the island?
To make the most of Ischia, it is best to plan for three to five days. This also gives you time to explore the island’s three main ports: Forio, Ischia Porto and Casamicciola Terme.
As for getting around, hiring a scooter remains an excellent way to travel easily between beaches, hilltop villages and thermal sites. Several bus routes also serve the entire island, although some more remote areas are easier to reach by car.
