Ina Yoon to make her mark in new women’s team golf league.
KOREA’S Ina Yoon will be part of a star-studded cast for the inaugural season of the Women’s TGL (WTGL), with the new women’s team golf league unveiling its five founding team rosters.
The league, created by TMRW Sports in partnership with the LPGA, will feature 25 players competing at the custom-built, technology-infused SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, from November.
The five teams are Atlanta Drive GC, Boston Common Golf, Los Angeles Golf Club, Motor City Golf Club and New York Golf Club.
Among the players are World Golf Hall of Fame members, major champions, Solheim Cup winners, established stars and promising young talents, with the 25-player field combining for 112 LPGA Tour victories and 15 major championships.
Yoon, 23, will represent Boston Common Golf alongside England’s world No. 6 Lottie Woad, American Megan Khang, seven-time LPGA Tour winner Celine Boutier of France and Japan’s Chizzy Iwai. Yoon has enjoyed a strong season, including top-five finishes at the Chevron Championship and Women’s PGA Championship.
The Korean said her participation in WTGL represented a full-circle moment, having first developed an interest in golf after visiting an indoor screen golf facility with her father.
She added that competing at SoFi Center would allow her to share the experience with fans in Korea and around the world.
The league will also feature seven other players from the Asia-Pacific region, including Thailand’s Jeeno Thitikul, Japan’s Chizzy and Aki Iwai, New Zealand’s Lydia Ko, Australia’s Minjee Lee, Japan’s Yuka Saso and China’s Ruoning Yin.
Eight of the 25 players are ranked inside the top 15 of the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings.
WTGL will use a round-robin regular season before moving into single-elimination semi-finals and a best-of-three final.
Each team has five players, with three competing in every match, while the fast-paced format will feature mic’d-up access, a shot clock, the strategic use of the Hammer and real-time performance data and analytics.
TMRW Sports president of golf Rufus Hack said the league would bring together world-class LPGA Tour stars with the energy of fans inside SoFi Center, while offering a new way for audiences to experience women’s team golf.
The inaugural season is set to begin in November, with further announcements on the schedule, tickets and broadcast details to follow.
