Indo jailed for obstructing cop

Kota Kinabalu: An Indonesian fruit seller was jailed 10 months on Wednesday for obstructing a police officer from carrying out his duty.

Taufik Ansari Samsulalam informed Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles during his pre-trial case management Wednesday that he wished to change his plea to guilty.

Taufik, 32, admitted to preventing Inspector Ahmad Zulfari from stopping his car at 12.30pm on Oct 22, 2022 behind a shop in Putatan town.

The charge under Section 186 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to two years or fine or both. on conviction.

Unrepresented, Taufik requested a lenient sentence as he is married with a child and only work as a fruit seller.

The prosecution applied for an adequate sentence and for Taufik to be referred to the Immigration Department as he has no valid identification documents.

The magistrate ordered Taufik to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest and be referred to the Immigration Department thereafter.

In another case, a 33-year-old self-employed was fined RM2,500 or 10 month’s jail for having stolen cable.

An IMM13 holder Iskandar Jakaria pleaded guilty to having 73 pieces of cable of various sizes belonging to Telekom Malaysia Berhad at 4.15pm on Jan 23, this year at a car park in front of Maya Condominium, Mile 2, here.

Iskandar had on Feb 6 this year claimed trial to the charge but changed his plea to guilty on Wednesday.

The charge under Section 411 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to five years or fine or both on conviction.

Counsel Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence representing Iskandar requested a lower fine on the grounds that Iskandar had been remanded for 32 days until Feb 24 after he managed to furnish the bail offered by the court.

Lim added that it was Iskandar’s first offence and that he did not financially benefit from the case as the items would be eventually returned to the owner.

Iskandar was also fined another RM2,300 or six month’s jail after he admitted to taking syabu.

Taking drugs under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drug Act provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years jail, on conviction.

Meanwhile, another four men were also penalised for committing a similar offence.

Muhamad Rizal, Chin Ket Siung, Darwin Jalil and Jamal Madaris pleaded guilty separately to taking syabu at separate locations here and in Penampang.

Muhamad and Chin were ordered to pay a fine of RM2,300 or six month’s jail each, while Darwin was fined RM1,800 or six month’s jail.

Jamal was handed six months jail from the date of his arrest on Feb 2, this year.
