KOTA KINABALU: A 46-year-old Indonesian died after the car he was driving collided with a bus along Jalan Tuaran near Petronas Likas early Sunday.
Kota Kinabalu Police Chief ACP Shahrudin Mat Husain said the accident occurred at about 1.25am and involved a Perodua Viva and a bus.
“Initial investigations found that the accident is believed to have occurred when the Perodua Viva, driven by a 46-year-old Indonesian man, exited a slip road to make a U-turn without noticing an approaching bus,” he said in a statement, Monday.
Shahrudin said the bus was travelling straight from Kota Kinabalu city centre towards Inanam when it struck the left side of the car and dragged it for about 15 metres.
The victim suffered serious injuries and was taken by the Fire and Rescue Department to the Emergency and Trauma Department at Queen Elizabeth Hospital II, but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at about 3.50am.
“The bus driver, a 34-year-old local, was unhurt.
“Both vehicles have been detained for further examination and police are also tracing independent witnesses as well as the victim’s next of kin,” he said.
The victim’s body will be sent to the Forensic Medicine Department at Queen Elizabeth Hospital I for a post-mortem after his next of kin is identified.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Shahrudin urged anyone with information to contact Investigating Officer Insp Royston Ubak at 016-3130153 or approach the nearest police station to assist investigations.
