Kota Kinabalu: An undocumented Indonesian woman was jailed nine months by the Magistrate’s Court, here, Thursday for helping to dispose of a stolen gold ring.
Liana Bunganden, 48, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to intentionally helping to dispose of the stolen ring at First Choice Gold Shop, Centre Point, at about 9pm on Aug 17.
The offence was charged under Section 414 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to seven years, a fine, or both, on conviction.
The court heard that the complainant lodged a police report after discovering that some of her belongings had allegedly been stolen by her domestic helper.
Following Liana’s arrest, police were led to the location where the stolen ring had been sold.
The ring was recovered and later identified by the complainant as her property.
Marilyn ordered Liana to serve the sentence from the date of her arrest and to be referred to the Immigration Department after completing her sentence.
Meanwhile, a 43-year-old man claimed trial to a similar charge.
Walter Anak Unggin pleaded not guilty to intentionally helping to dispose of three bottles of stolen facial cleanser at Millennium Grocery Store, Inanam Point, at about 4.10pm on Aug 26.
The charge was also framed under Section 414 of the Penal Code.
The court fixed Oct 1 for pre-trial case management and released Walter on RM1,300 bail in two sureties.
He was also ordered to report to the investigating officer once a month.
